ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT
The Science stream was introduced in this college in the year 2012 and Department of Physics was established in the same year to impart teaching and training to the students leading to the Bachelor’s degree with Physics as one of the subjects. Prior to the establishment of this Department in the college, desirous students from the college had to go outside the Uri town to study this subject for B.Sc. Since 2017 nearly 117 B.Sc students have been taught and trained at UG level in the subject area of Physics in this department.
What makes the physics experience at Govt Degree College, Uri a special one, over and above the syllabus, are: the dedication of its teachers, the curiosity of its students to learn and explore, and the unique atmosphere of the college away from crowdy and noisy places. At their best our teachers require their students to learn honestly, think independently, recognize quality, and develop the confidence to create rather than merely reproduce. At their best our students try and utilize each facility available in the department to their best. The quality of the students gives the teachers the freedom to go beyond the confines of the syllabus, whether in practical matters like computational physics and allied subject areas like renewable energy or theoretical research areas like astrophysics and quantum mechanics etc. Students do projects to explore areas off the charted path. Teachers and students alike work hard and think hard. And yet, there is an atmosphere of joyful association in the department. Though the pressure of tests and projects cannot be denied, it is not relentless: there is time enough for discussion and dreaming, for participation in extra-curricular activities, and for fun and fellowship. In keeping with College’s tradition physics students get a lot of personal attention from teachers, an important source of encouragement and guidance.
Besides core papers the department runs Skill Course on Renewable Energy and Energy Harvesting which is an open basket course and can be pursued by students of any stream besides those from physics background. The department is responsive towards the contemporary needs of the students enrolled in terms of conduct of seminars and workshops so that students are abreast with the latest developments in the higher education in general and subject area of physics in particular. The department encourages students with the stint of creating knowledge and makes every effort to nurture research based pedagogy.

- Equipments and Apparatus as per the prescribed syllabus
The department envisages developing on the lines of Skill development and Frugal innovation in various areas like renewable energy, electronics and computational physics so that the pass outs are well equipped for the job market and further research in their life beyond this college.
